In 1958, an American engineer named Kilby integrated transistors, resistors and capacitors on a small plate, and connected these components with very thin wires by welding. There were about 20 components integrated on this board. The next year, Kilby declared a patent to the United States Patent Office. This tiny solid assembly of semiconductor components was named the integrated circuit, and Kilby was credited as the inventor of the first integrated circuit.
