Yin Zhiyao, born in 1944 in Beijing, studied in Beijing's elite No. 4 Middle School, was admitted to the chemical physics Department of the University of Science and Technology in 1962, and was assigned to Lanzhou Oil Refinery in 1968. He received his master's degree in Chemistry from Peking University in 1980. Later, he went to the University of California at Los Angeles to study for a doctorate.
