Originally a member of the University of London Federation, the College was formally declared independent on 9 July 2007, its centenary year, and was formed by the merger of several institutions: St Mary's Hospital Medical School (1988), the National Heart and Lung Research Centre (1995), and Charing and Westminster Medical School (1997). Its business school was later established in 2003.
