What does a 5-nanometer chip mean?

5nm chips are integrated circuits with scale production capabilities, reliability, and a modular approach to circuit design that ensures the rapid adoption of standardized integrated circuits instead of designs using discrete transistors.

Integrated circuits have two main advantages over discrete transistors: cost and performance. The low cost is due to the fact that the chip prints all of its components as a unit through photolithography, rather than making just one transistor at a time. The high performance is due to the fast switching of the components, which consumes less energy because the components are small and close to each other. In 2006, the chip area ranged from a few square millimeters to 350 mm, and one million transistors could be reached per mm.

The 5-nanometer chip means that the chip is smaller, the transistor per unit area is denser, and the power consumption is lower. 5 nanometers refers to the characteristic size of the chip. The lowest component of the chip is the mos tube, the smaller the feature size, the smaller the mos tube produced, which means the higher the integration of the chip, the higher the integration of the chip can be crammed into more functional circuits under the condition that the chip occupies the same area.
