Special integrated circuits (ASics) do not necessarily require programmable logic devices (FPgas) to be designed and manufactured. Asics are chips that are custom-designed and produced in factories to perform specific functions. In contrast, FPGas are chips that implement multiple functions through programmable logic.
Asics are more specialized and customized than FPgas and are often used in situations where high performance and lower cost are required. However, designing an ASIC requires significant design costs and time because it uses a customized design and process flow, and often requires extensive prototyping and testing.
