Its business scope is divided into three segments: IT Solutions, Network Solutions and Electronic Devices. IT solutions provide software, hardware and related services to commercial enterprises, governments and individual users.
Network Solutions is the design and delivery of broadband systems, mobile and wireless communication network systems, mobile phones, broadcasting and other systems. NEC's electronic equipment includes semiconductors, displays and other electronic devices. NEC also produces Versa series laptops for the international market and Lavie series laptops for the domestic Japanese market. NEC is also the inventor of the Earth Simulator, which was once the world's fastest supercomputer. NEC is a member of the Sumitomo Group.
Over the past five years, NEC has consistently ranked in the top four in U.S. patent filings, with an average of 1,764 approvals per year.
Prior to the use of the current name, that is, until 1983, the Company was known as Nippon Electric Company Ltd. The name is still used in Japan.
