On September 29, 2017, TSMC announced that the next 3 nanometer (nm) process wafer fab will be located in the Southern Science and Industrial Park in Tainan City, Taiwan, and is expected to be mass-produced in 2022 at the earliest. TSMC announced in the first quarter of 2020 that the 3 nm process will be trial-produced in 2021 and officially mass-produced in the second half of 2022, and its 3 nm process will continue to use FinFET (fin field-effect transistor).

In May 2019, Samsung said that its own 3nm is expected to be launched in 2021. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020, the launch of Samsung's 3nm process may be delayed until 2022.
