There are only three companies in the world that can make high-end processors: Intel, TSMC, and South Korea's Samsung. The Semiconductor Industry Association estimates that 80 percent of the world's chip manufacturing capacity is now in Asia. This vanguard may soon be reduced to two members. Intel, which has spent the past 30 years trying to advance its leading position in the industry, is faltering. News reports suggest that Intel may start outsourcing some of its chip production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, which has overtaken it.
