Apple iPhone8 will support wireless charging?

Steve Rizzone, CEO of California-based Energous, said in an interview with The Verge that they had signed a \"key strategic partnership\" with \"one of the largest consumer electronics companies in the world.\"

Energous is the company behind the \"WattUp\" platform, which uses small antennas to transmit energy over considerable distances. It operates over a longer distance than wireless charging methods that rely on traditional inductive charging coils. The charging process is controlled by software, which means the end user can decide the order in which the device receives power and create a charging schedule for it.

However, previous patents filed by Apple suggest that the tech giant has also been exploring more traditional methods of inductive wireless charging. The patent refers to an \"inductive charging station\" similar to the Apple Watch's plastic wireless charger. This means that the iPhone 8 will have a glass case to support wireless charging.

Foxconn is said to be making wireless charging components for the iPhone 8.

Kgi Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said: One of the reasons we believe the new iPhone will switch from metal to glass is to support wireless charging. Since Foxconn needs to deploy most of its resources to develop and produce OLED iphones, we expect Pegatron to be the exclusive supplier of wireless chargers.

The technology is expected to be released in the second half of 2017 and is expected to be used in three upcoming iphones.
